Well, It has been 7 years since the Firebird project was born out of the Borland InterBase open source effort, and then hosted at the very popular SourceForge site.

Since then, the Firebird community of developers and users have made this project very popular by continuing to develop and release various versions of the core database engine and supporting connectivity tools.

It is fitting that the SourceForge community has chosen the Firebird project as the Project of the Month for December’2007.

Kudos and Congratulations to the Firebird team! Very well deserved indeed!

From time to time a new programming language is born that makes the task of developing new (types of) applications easier. Ruby (born many years ago) is getting a lot of attention nowadays mainly due to Ruby on Rails (or RoR), a web framework.

CodeGear has just announced 3rdRail, an IDE primarily focused on Ruby on Rails application development. 3rdRail supports Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. To simplify your RoR application development with a mature database right from your IDE, CodeGear has packaged InterBase Developer Edition along with 3rdRail.

For InterBase, this is very exciting; being able to address an exciting technology for developers in a new space. As you may have noticed, this means that InterBase has just released support for the Mac OS X. For the last 7 years or so, InterBase was only available on Windows, Linux and Solaris. Now, we have ported InterBase to Mac OS X and bring its powerful feature set to that emerging platform. More on this in a later post.

Of course, support for 3rdRail with InterBase would not have been possible without providing native connectivity to Ruby. This is where IBRuby comes in. Thanks to its lineage from Fireruby, and some stupendous work from Richard Vowles, IBRuby provides everything that you need to work with InterBase from Ruby, RoR and 3rdRail. Thanks, Richard!
I encourage you to visit GrabTheRail and checkout the excitement! Don’t forget to checkout the cool demos!

Thanks to our DevRel team, all the CodeRage presentations are available here.
InterBase had a few presentations focusing on some exciting features and integrations with other CodeGear products such as Delphi 2007 for Win32 and Delphi for PHP.
The InterBase 2007 presentation is available here. The presentation is organized in 2 parts: the first part is a 20 minute PowerPoint presentation from me, followed by a very interesting demo of InterBase 2007 Disaster Recovery features and Incremental Dump by Charlie Caro. I encourage you all to check it out at your leisure.
Andreano also demo’d InterBase with Delphi for PHP. That was cool too! Check it out (22 minutes into the presentation) here
Jose Leon specifically demo’d PHP database support, and InterBase Express for PHP. Check it out here
There were also presentations from Bill Todd and Craig Stuntz, Craig’s (on INTL support in InterBase) is available here. Bill’s presentation on “Creating a Disaster Recovery Plan with InterBase“ is an excellent coverage of your planning process WRT disaster recovery in InterBase, and should be listened to in addition to Charlie’s demo of the features in this area.
Thanks to all the participants and attendees!

Hi Folks!

fresh off the oven….

InterBase 2007 Developer Edition is now available for free download at this site

This is the first time a Developer Edition for InterBase is generally available. Previously, you got Developer Editions only with some editions of Borland/CodeGear IDEs.

So, please feel to download and use it for Development purposes with your favourite Borland and CodeGear development tools, and also with other development environments.

Please note that this Developer Edition now allows "remote client" applications to connect to the database server. This will hopefully help you in testing your applications with the database server during development.

The Developer Edition just released is available as separate downloads for Windows, Linux and Solaris. This is also a first for Linux and Solaris environments.
