InterBase 2007 Developer Edition now available
Hi Folks!
fresh off the oven….
InterBase 2007 Developer Edition is now available for free download at this site
This is the first time a Developer Edition for InterBase is generally available. Previously, you got Developer Editions only with some editions of Borland/CodeGear IDEs.
So, please feel to download and use it for Development purposes with your favourite Borland and CodeGear development tools, and also with other development environments.
Please note that this Developer Edition now allows "remote client" applications to connect to the database server. This will hopefully help you in testing your applications with the database server during development.
The Developer Edition just released is available as separate downloads for Windows, Linux and Solaris. This is also a first for Linux and Solaris environments.

Tried to download. The site goes to a simple survey and creates a request for a key to be emailed. No download of the actual product provided. Try again and it simply says that a request for the key has already been made. Can’t seem to download.

I would love to buy a 100 pack of IB2007 Desktop, but not until the Desktop version works with Windows Vista.
I think you must do something about this really soon and allow TCP connections in the Desktop version, but limit it and only accept calls from "Localhost".
Our application must soon go RTM, and we consider to change DB engine to MySQL or something else if we can’t get a Desktop version that will work on Vista.
One other reason to allow TCP calls on the Desktop version is to take advantage of the multi instance feature as well.

John,
I’ll check with our web team and see why the download site does not allow multiple downloads of the Developer Edition. One should be able to…

Magnus,
we are currently testing on Vista, and plan to release an update, if needed. You can expect to see an update in this area this quarter.
Since you mention the need for "localhost" TCP connections, have you checked if Server Edition will work for you?
WRT multi-instancing, the Desktop Edition works. Your application should be able to target a different (non-default) Desktop instance by providing the instance name in IB_PROTOCOL environment variable. Have you tried this?

Sriram,
The Server edition cost more, and we dont need the ability to connect from anything else then the local machine.
Regarding the instance thing: Our idea was to embedd the installation in our own installation and use a special instance name to make sure that any possible previous IB installations that the customer has wont be affected or conflicted.
The IB_PROTOCOL varaible was news to me, where can I find more information about that? I always thought the environment variable name was "INTERBASE", but even so, I think it mess things up with any other concurrent IB installations?

John,
I am told that this is now fixed. You should be able to download it again.

Magnus,
we just released an update to InterBase 2007 (as Service Pack 1). This update addresses the issues found during our certification on Windows Vista.
you can download the update from http://dn.codegear.com/article/34111
