Random Thoughts on the Passing Scene #61
20 Mar
- Nice article in Redmond Developer — Delphi Goes to School in Russia
- Here’s another one in SDA India — QA with Jim Douglas (CEO) & Ravi Kumar (Principal Architect of JBuilder) for CodeGear
- Help Update #2 is now available for download on the Registered User Page. You can also get the IDE to check for updates (from the Start Menu) and it should find it for you. Another delivery on our promise to continuously improve and frequently update the documentation.
- A note for all you true Star Trek fans: The original three seasons of Star Trek are now all online at cbs.com, and totally legal. For an Old School, Captain Kirk kind of guy like me, this is awesome. I remember very well watching these after school when I was a kid. Outstanding stuff.
- John Moskakis got ASP.Net MVC Preview 2 working with Delphi 2007. Pretty cool.

Yea, more help updates!
March 20th, 2008 at 5:42 pmToday help quality and size is about 1/4-1/3 of required.
March 21st, 2008 at 1:39 amI still insist on making public Wiki from current help with ability to edit topics of everyone and ability download all Wiki contents as chm help file at any moment (with automatic conversion).
This approach is cheap, cool, and make you some free marketing.
1) I haven’t downloaded the Help Update yet but thanks for keeping the updates flowing, even if they are huge downloads…
2) As for the CBS Classics, either they took the movies down due to high bandwidth usage, or, most likely, they have some IP filtering in place… All I get, no matter what episode I try, is a lousy quality sound saying "this content is currently unavailable"… I’m from Portugal but they don’t say, at least visibly, that it’s available only in the USA… And I e-mailed the link to a few friends before even trying it out! Duh!
March 21st, 2008 at 4:24 amJust to clarify, is this the same Help update that was available in February from ‘Check for Updates’?
March 21st, 2008 at 5:59 amIs this a "December Help Update" or something new?

It’s the same help update that comes "over the wire". Some people like to download it themselves instead of using the Automatic Update mechanism.

March 21st, 2008 at 9:00 amThat’s exciting thing about MS MVC and Delphi.
But still the power of ASP.NET MVC could not be used with Delphi just because of it doesn’t support lots of .NET 3.5 features (such as extension methods and lamdas).
I doubt it is possible to use MVC Contrib (which is a "must").
As an example, How is it possible to write this basic (in C# & .NET 3.5) code in Delphi?
Html.ActionLink("Search Drinks", s=>s.Results("Juice", 2))
Sample from (http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2007/12/03/asp-net-mvc-framework-part-2-url-routing.aspx)
And it seems like Castle MonoRail should be much more suitable for using with Delphi until it will start supporting .NET 3.5 features.
Anyway, it’s a good start and I believe Delphi will catch up the missing stuff soon.
March 24th, 2008 at 4:30 pmFYI CodeGear: the "Check for Updates" on the Start menu is telling me no updates are available.
March 25th, 2008 at 6:46 amNick,
What’s happened to http://homepages.codegear.com??
It’s simply does not load (i tried the domain index, jvcl homepage, and some others).
It’s just me or there is a problem?
