Random Thoughts on the Passing Scene #50

  • Allen puts out some good information on Unicode and Delphi. Chris Bensen does as well.
  • Marco Cantu has announced a new support system for Delphi called support @ marcocantu.com. It’s an interesting concept — private newsgroups specific to your company.
  • Not Delphi news, but JBuilder was named the year’s best Java IDE by InfoWorld. That’s cool.
  • We have a new page on our site about the different licensing options that we have. I bet that many of you weren’t even aware that we sold other than the standard named user license. For instance, anyone working in a "Delphi shop" with more than, say, four or five licenses probably would want to manage things with a networked named license.
  • Sergio Cardoso, our intrepid Installer Engineer, posted this in the *.install.delphi group:

For those running Vista the following registry entry can speed up install times considerably:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer

Set a DWORD value named DisableAutomaticApplicationShutdown to 1. This will disable the Restart Manager which is causing the delay on Vista. And as always, be really careful when dealing with registry entries.

  • My favorite RSS Reader, FeedDemon is now free (as in beer). FeedDemon is written in Delphi, by the way. I can’t fail to mention that, now, can I? :-)

Restart manager? Hmmm. Time to do research - I wonder how this is all going to play out after Vista SP1 is out, with its new patching system to reduce reboots. Google here I come..

Nick - You need to correct the link to feeddemon. The url should have two d’s.

Re the licensing thing: When you’re dealing with concurrent licenses, how do you count pair programming (two developers at one computer)? Is that using one concurrent license, or two? Just curious (since all our production code is done paired).

    John –

    Link fixed. Thanks.

    Jim McKeeth Says:

On that licensing page, the header "Networked Concurrent Licenses" is not formatted like a header and it makes the text a little confusing.

    Interested Bloke -

I can’t say — depends on what you get on ebay. It’s against the license to buy it on ebay and register it.

    Joe —

I’m not sure what the license says about pair programming; I’ll ask.

However, I’m sure that you need two licenses to do pair programming.
