Best text editor? 4 years ago I would probably have said NoteTab, but today I say PSPad. PSPad is like a public secret. Only very few people know this editor, myself I only know about its existence the last 3 months.

However there is still a few rough points that I really would like to see fixed in next release. E.g. hexeditor uses 16 bit words, graphics artifacts when changing around in lists…

If you like PSPad, then go to download.com and write a review on the page of PSPad.

RJ TextEd (http://www.rj-texted.se/) is also a text editor written in Delphi. Twistpad (http://www.carthagosoft.net/twistpad/) is another.

Truth be told though, I’ve been using Notepad2 (http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html) for a Notepad replacement. Previously I was using metapad (http://www.liquidninja.com/metapad/).

For a next post in this series I suggest taking a look at small desktop utilities like Mmm (http://hace.us-inc.com/mmm.shtml) for Explorer context menu management or Total Commander (http://www.ghisler.com/) etc.

I personally prefer ConTEXT (of course written in Delphi ) It is freeware and you can use it as IDE replacement for the beloved TurboPascal (we still use that for programming our mobile barcode scanners)

Nick, I can’t resist this perfect change to once more climb up on that soapbox.

Please, please PLEASE - can’t we get more modern regular expressions in the Delphi search dialog? (and the search and replace dialog too!)

(ya, ya, you can use GExpert’s grep, but until it starts intercepting the search and replace commands, I don’t really see a lot of it… I think search and in flies the keyboard sequence without thought - when I want to replace stuff its ^q^r without any more effort… GExpert’s grep works, but its so out of way normally that I just avoid it…)

Jan has a great book & website about Regular Expressions that covers exactly what I’m talking about. (just to be a total shill, the book is available from LuLu and is EXCELLENT!!! )
