Random Thoughts on the Passing Scene #35

- Julian Bucknall points out how easy it is to use DevExpress’s ASP.NET components in CodeGear RAD Studio 2007
- Dr. Bob has created a lulu.com community for Delphi developers. Part of that, of course, is the list of books about Delphi available on lulu.com. So far, the books listed are just Dr. Bob’s stuff and Julian Bucknall’s excellent The Tomes of Delphi: Algorithms and Data Structures. Now there are a couple of other things to do:
- Get Marco’s book listed there
- Get some other authors (Cough, Ray Konopka, cough) to publish their books on Lulu.com
- One of the things I demo’ed a bunch of times in Europe was building Blackfish stored procedures with Delphi for .Net. To aid in that, I built a bunch of templates that make writing the associated code much easier. They build on an original template written by Leonel Togniolli. You can get the templates, along with a script engine that fills in a few things for you on CodeCentral.
- Bravest man on the web this week? Easily Sergio Cardoso, our Install Engineer. He started a blog about what he’s up to.
- Andreano Lanusse is one of our Latin American Evangelists, and he’s got a really nice ASP.NET 2.0 demo in Delphi, showing some AJAX features, as well as using the Global.asax file to your advantage.

So, what’s up about the Turbo Explorer Delphi 2007 ? There will be a release any time soon ?
October 3rd, 2007 at 10:22 amI tried the devexpress ASP.NET components.
They are not working. A lot of errors - well
you could use the Button … but the grids / dataware
fields ARE NOT WORKING.

October 11th, 2007 at 7:02 amThe excellent DevExpress do not work with RAD Studio 2007, I am told due to the way the designer support has been implemented.
Codegear, for me, that looks close to the end of the road, I have been with you since Turbo Pascal V1.0 but you are just now ploughing your own furrow. Lacking open support for such excellent breed of components such as DeveExpress is simply nonsense. I can train my developers easier on new environments / langueages rather than start reinventing teh wheel writing our own components. Opportunity was missed on this !

What makes you think that DevExpress components don’t work with RAD Studio 2007? I believe that is totally false. A major part of DevExpress’s business is Delphi components.
Wouldn’t it be better to check it our for yourself, rather then relying on "what you are told"?

Then you are mistaken, they do not work as confirmed by Julian Bucknall of DevExpress himself, go see his blog. And before that I had tried them myself, being an enterprise DXperience user.
What I was told was by the top men in Devexpress themselves so if I can’t rely on them re their own product, who can I rely on ?
Codegear need to get together with the guys at DevExpress and fix this because otherwise, it will detract from what is an otherwise excellent product (RAD Studio 2007).
I use Delphi heavily, always have and was looking forward to writing some cool stuff with ASPXperience controls but that is now not likely in the short term
