Updates and Releases — an Explanation
The release of "Highlander", now known as CodeGear RAD Studio 2007, means some changes for the product that you all have come to know and love, Delphi 2007 for Win32.
First, many of you have already seen Update 3 for Delphi 2007 for Win32. It is a bug fix update, providing hundreds and hundreds of fixes for an already very solid product. These fixes were the result of building the RAD Studio, and of course we wanted our loyal customers to have these. Many of you are enjoying the added performance and stability, and if you aren’t, select "Check for Updates" from the Start Menu, and you’ll be informed of the new update. (You can also go here for more information about Update 3. You can also download the setup executable.).
But as a result of Highlander, we’ve also provided an upgrade to Delphi 2007 for Win32. That product now includes Blackfish SQL RAD Studio Edition. as well as the DBXClient technology so that you can connect to Blackfish from a Win32 client. It also includes updates to the dbExpress metadata classes that allow you to control and manage the metadata in a dbExpress Database.
This new product is called Delphi 2007 for Win32 R2, "R2" standing for "Release 2". R2 is what you’ll get if you buy Delphi 2007 for Win32 today. Delphi 2007 for Win32 R2 includes Update 3. In the Old School Terminology, this would be a "0.5" upgrade to Delphi 2007, but since the industry has moved away from good old version numbers, we use the "R2" terminology.
So, just to clarify that terminology:
- "Update" refers to small, generally bug fix improvements to a product. Updates will generally be delivered via the online update mechanism.
- "Release" refers to a new product upgrade with new features. We’ll be abbreviating this as "R2", etc. going forward.
So, here are a couple of use case scenarios:
- A couple of months ago, you bought Delphi 2007. You were recently advised about an update, and it ran, and you now have Delphi 2007 for Win32 with Update 2.
- You go here today and buy and then install Delphi 2007. You will have Delphi 2007 for Win32 R2 installed. Your install will have all the fixes from Update 3 included.
- A couple of months ago, you bought Delphi 2007. You just updated it to Update 3. You then buy RAD Studio, and install it. The installer will install all three personalities over your Delphi 2007 Update 3. You now have the latest version of everything and all the features that are available today.
- You have Delphi 2007. You are getting RAD Studio this week. You don’t have to install Update 3 before RAD Studio. RAD Studio will update your system to include Update 3.
If you guys have questions, I’ll answer them in the comments, and also update this blog post with further information.
Followup Issues:
- Support and Maintenance Customers will be able to download the install and get their keys online.
- We’ll be getting an ISO download up very soon.
- You can install just the Win32 personality of RAD Studio, and then later install the other personalities.
- If you are planning on installing RAD Studio soon, you need not install Update #3
- The bits in Delphi 2007 for Win32 R2 and CodeGear RAD Studio 2007 are the same.

Just checking - I do not have to reinstall all of the components I installed for D2007 Win 32, correct?
September 14th, 2007 at 10:54 amOh, I mean when I do the last option - buy (already have it) RAD Studio and install it over D2007.
September 14th, 2007 at 10:55 amThe "download the setup executable." link looks like it is pointing to someplace on your hard drive :-).. I can’t browse to that no matter how hard I try.
September 14th, 2007 at 11:54 amWill it be possible for SA customers to download an ISO DVD Image of RAD Studio 2007?
And will it be possible to install only the Win32 personality and then - at a later date - add the other personalities without uninstalling the Win32 version?
September 14th, 2007 at 12:04 pmPlease make it clear - is there any difference between Delphi 2007 R2 and Rad Studio 2007 win32 personality?
September 14th, 2007 at 10:12 pmHi Nick,
now I am even more confused:
Is Delphi 2007 R2 the same as Delphi 2007 + Update 3?
twm
September 15th, 2007 at 3:25 amCan we reasonably expect a new release of Turbo Delphi in the near future ?
September 15th, 2007 at 6:54 amThe blogger does not read comments or confused by version zoo like everybody else.
September 15th, 2007 at 9:15 pmOnce again, if I do understand this the right way, a totally wrong approach IMHO. Those, who paid for the original D2007 (and for how many elder versions…), shall pay once again for this version.
How much did it cost me and many, many other developers to debug problems that occurred with the original version? How many hours did every developer spend trying to cope with this crappy help-system? How…?
Wouldn’t it have been a real good opportunity to pay-back a little bit?!
just my two cents
September 16th, 2007 at 10:34 amMac7 - update 3, including the help updates, is *free*. All R2 adds (I think) is Blackfish and the query builder, so it’s doubtful a person who had bought the original version of D2007 (and so without SA) would desperately want it.
September 16th, 2007 at 2:53 pmCR, I understand that this update is free and that a lot of bugs seem to be cleared (ain’t we’re talking about the 11th/12th version of this compiler?). Thanks for this bug-fixing! But they, Codegear, add a brand-new-untested SQL DB and ask us, their customers to pay for it and test this.
September 16th, 2007 at 10:56 pm$1.274 for an Enterprise update or better spoken, for this Blackfish SQL and the DBX4client? No, not me. MS SQLServer Express works pretty good. . .
Sorry for those harsh words, but I’m a bit frustrated
I posted this on Chris Pattinsons blog also, apologies for the double up, but hopefully either of the two of your will be able to figure it out. I wasn’t sure what blog post it was more relevant too (Probably this one)

Regarding downloading the ISO
I have had a problem downloading the 4.2GB ISO image. I’ve tried 4 different times and it has stopped at 88%, 95%, 95% and 50% respectively.
I’ve tried using FlashGet, and Free Download Manager but they get to a point where they are no longer able to resume the download. Using the FTP Server as the source they send the resume command with the correct syntax, but the FTP Server simply says the transfer is complete right away..
i.e.
REST 4270456832
RETR CodeGearRadStudio2007_v11.0.2804.9245.5.iso
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for CodeGearRadStudio2007_v11.0.2804.9245.5.iso (4467032064 Bytes)
Transfer Complete
Is this due to the servers being overloaded or another problem?
Would it be possible to get teh ISO split up into say 100mb chunks or something.
September 18th, 2007 at 7:30 pmWhat about another useful scenario:
""A couple of months ago, you bought Delphi 2007 with Software Assurance, then […]""
Are ""Support and Maintenance Customers"" the same as the ones who bought the ""Software Assurance""? I yes, then I guess that the scenario:
""will be able to download the install and get their keys online"" applies.
September 19th, 2007 at 7:49 am"hundreds and hundreds of fixes for an already very solid product"
so funny
I’ve been with borland since turbo pascal 3.15 and then delphi, im worried about the bloated it is getting to be
i hope Delphi8 and BDS2006 phantom doesn’t strike again
