Random Thoughts on the Passing Scene #31

Lots of stuff happening around here as Highlander draws ever closer.
- The Color Wars continue! I ranted a bit about it on the Delphi Hour yesterday, and I’ve clearly rubbed some folks the wrong way. Okay, so Liz came up with some better colors for ihatethecapslockkey.com. Basically she got rid of the green, and I agree that it looks better. So, I guess that now the site looks better, this means we must have fixed a whole bunch of bugs in Highlander, right?
- The indefatigable DavidI is sponsoring the inaugural CodeGear Video Contest. Looks like a lot of fun — basically you can submit any video at all as long as it pertains to CodeGear in some way. Winners get some seriously nice prizes, including the grand prize, which is one of everything that we sell, I gather. Sweet. Break out the cameras and the Camtasias. Should be fun.
- From the “Keep your Eyes Open“ Department: Had a meeting with Anders Ohlsson and David I yesterday, and we are planning out a bunch of Highlander “sneak peak” stuff. They will probably be some online Camtasia stuff, but we should get beta blogging going as well. So, keep your ear to the ground for that stuff (to switch metaphors from the start of this section.)
- Dee Elling, our kickbutt Doc Manager, is keeping busy. She’s posted more PDF files of the help, and I’ve heard a rumor she is going to kick out a CHM version as well, as has been requested by a number of customers. The Help continues to improve!
- QualityCentral Update: Chris Pattinson has the scoop on a new Status for reports: Pending. Internally, if we need more information about a report — we can’t reproduce it, there’s not enough in the report for us to do anything, etc. — we close it and mark it “Needs More Info“. The fact that it is closed doesn’t mean we’ll never look at it again, it just means the submitter has to provide more info and open it back up. Well, having a bug “Closed“ seem to cause folks a bit of consternation and wasn’t working well when we did this in QualityCentral. So we’ll mark those reports that need info as “Pending“ meaning we are waiting for more information. Should be a bit more palatable and clearer for the community.

When are replays of the latest Delphi Hours going to be posted? I miss listening to them.
August 3rd, 2007 at 7:54 pmAh, come on, the color blind haven’t had their vote yet, I gotta figure some groups probably just see a pale shade of whatever. Is that blue good feng shui?
August 3rd, 2007 at 10:32 pmHoi m.Th.
You are right about the Wikipedia presence of code examples. This will be helpful to all Delphi users especially new users that are unfamiliar with the language or new to programming in general. The faster we can help them the earlier they will later be able to contribute to the Delphi community. As a side effect it also shows that Delphi is a force to reckon with.
The idea is good and every Delphi coder should help on Wikipedia updates and also on the Delphi Wiki. However I do not think CodeGear should spend their time there. CodeGear should put their effort on the development of Delphi, VCL and Object Pascal, i.e. all the thing that the we outside CodeGear can not change, but which we all need to make Delphi top of line.

August 4th, 2007 at 6:00 amI have to agree with "m. Th.", more examples on Wikipedia would be great.
The next time I look at something on Wikipedia and it’s got example code, I’ll try to add a Delphi example (time available of course).
August 4th, 2007 at 10:07 amSome years ago I wrote a little application for my brother (using Delphi, naturally - probably D5) that made a noise whenever he mistakenly hit the capslock key, and he still uses it to this day. I’ll let him know about ihatethecapslockkey.com.
August 4th, 2007 at 3:49 pmI guess I could have changed the colours a lot more, but, the colours should be pretty much colour blind friendly as theres no real cross over of the 2 blindnesses, (eg only purple, and it will come up as a shade of blue to the red/blue people).. I wanted minimal effort as I noticed the style sheet behind it was terribly over complicated, so, while its not the best colour scheme ever invented, i didnt wanna mess with Nicks work too much, just tone it to less green!
