A few things in the VCL you might not have seen or heard of.

31 Oct

Here’s a Camtasia demo of a few things in the VCL that you might not know about or have taken a look at before.

Those things are:

  • VCL Guidelines and Margins – makes laying out your forms ten times easier
  • The Margin and AlignWithMargins properties — allow to provide proper spacing between your controls
  • The SnapBuffer and ScreenSnap properties — they allow you to get your app to “snap“ to the edges of the screen

Pretty cool features in both VCL for Win32 and VCL.Net.  These are available in BDS2006 and the Turbo Delphi Professional (Win32 and .Net)

Was "AlignWithMargins" introduced in BDS 2006?

I found it 2 weeks ago (after using the 2006 version for almost a year now), and I love it.

I cant live with myself if it this has been around for years. ;)

Btw, I blogged about this as a follow to the post on about.com which you can read here:

Theres quite a lot that you will not have seen if you only look at the turboexplorer.com site and do not know about BDN. The TE pages haven’t changed much for a while. How about some code - demos - examples etc. to get people started on their projects? You could include some selected links to code central (for some of the less dull items with source). How about some Articles - there is a menu item on the /delphi page that is not linked to anything. There is a load of stuff on BDNtv that could be linked to from turboexplorer.com and add real guts to the site. PS are we getting a Delphi hour today?

Guidlines are YAUF - Yet Another Undocumented Feature(otherwise known as the entire IDE OpenTools API - if you want us to support this stuff, please don’t keep making us guess. This has been a LONG standing complaint that has never been taken seriously).

Some docs on creating custom guildline info

for custom components would be nice.
