Random Thoughts on the Passing Scene #17

29 Sep

  • Here’s a random thought:  It’s been a while since I did a RTotPS.  So here is one.
  • I confess it:  I installed VS.NET on my machine.  And now everytime IE opens a page with a Javascript error on it, a dialog pops up and insists on trying to get me to start Visual Studio to debug it.  I have to hit the “Go away“ button about four times to make it stop. I see no way to end this madness.
  • Microsoft patches their developer apps, too.  I thought VS.NET 2005 was so wonderful that it didn’t need patching?  ;-)  And, oh, by the way, that post is the one that announces that Vista won’t run VS2003.  Bummer.  And that the aforementioned SP1 for VS.NET 2005 will be problematic on Vista.
  • I posted before about Skype hiring.  They also have a Developer Zone.  I assume that it’s pretty Delphi friendly.k  It seems to me that there are tons and tons of things that you could do with Skype’s SDK.
  • It seems I’m quite the inspiration;-) (And yes, I know I have two more to go…)

  • You know what I wish?  I wish I could have back all the time in my life that I’ve spent untangling wires.

Have you checked the Editor in VS 2005? I would say they are catching on Emacs, which MS uses for many years. Delphi needs a more complete Editor and a number of well established documented libraries (free) such as:

    1) Generic AVL iterative trees. Recursive trees cannot stand the MS competition.

    2) A Blas/Lapack and sparse library up to what Intel is doing. A direct sparse solver can take some time to complete, with pivoting, symmetric (2×2 pivot LDL^T) and non-symmetric cases, etc…

And a manual written by a Professor.

The rest is just about PERFECT in Delphi. Execution speed impresses anyone. The tools are wonderful.

Maybe this is off-topic, you can remove if that’s the case.

IE tools, internet options, advanced, browsing, disable script debugging

and, they didn’t say VS2003 WON’T run on Vista, is just that is not supported; specifically, advanced debugging features are not available

    I.P. Nichols Says:

We already know that Vista balks when attempting to install Delphi 7, any chance DevCo will help?

And what about support for BDS 2006 and Highlander on Vista especially the known Vista debugging problem mentioned by Eber in his comment?

    David Howes Says:

Bit off topic but… I have noticed that Vista does a great job of making it easy to support a dual boot configuration. That being the case I can’t see, in a non corporate environement anyway, what the rush is to get BDS working on Vista.

    I.P. Nichols Says:

David, Sure you can dual boot XP and Vista but it’s a PITA. A VM setup might be a better solution and that’s how Microsoft will recommend that VS 2003 be run on Vista since they only intend to fix the debugger problem for VS 2005 and the VB6 IDE.

I rather suspect that Delphi 5,6,7 users who choose Vista will always be faced with using a VM solution. But then how many are likely to choose Vista?<g>

    Julian Benjamin Says:

Script debugging is enabled/disabled in the IE advanced settings, nothing to do with Visual Studio. Can’t see an end to the madness? Have you ever done any script debugging in IE?

And what do you mean about patching MS apps? Visual Studio 6 was up to SP3 I think. You seem to be a Borland/DevCo fanatic, or an anti-Microsoft fanatic. Post something that’s productive, instead of just whining, because it makes your blog seem childish.

    Julian –

    Give me a break.

    Phil Gilmore Says:

I’ve been a developer for more than a decade, and I’ve never done any script debugging in IE. I simply work in different areas of development.

And as far as a childish blog, I’ve yet to see a blog that was really productive (is there such a thing?)…

Being fanatic about one thing or opposed to another isn’t childish. I have my passions too. So do you (obviously). Maybe we can leave Nick to his.

If you feel that a particular person isn’t entitled to their own opinion, you can always do the mature thing and just remove the blog from your feed list.

    Brian Moelk Says:

    1) Don’t use IE. ;)
    2) BDS has to be *better* than VS.NET, MS is the 1k pound gorilla in the space so they will get much more latitude. BDS 2006 is much better than 2005, so you guys are moving in the right direction ITO quality, now straighten out the .NET story…

    3) Wires suck; but batteries do too.
