Random Thoughts on the Passing Scene #11

28 Jul

  • Wow — you don’t get mentioned in eWeek every day, er, week.
  • Charlie Calvert has been assimilated. ;-) Charlie is one of the nicest guys in the whole world and I sure wish him well.  I’ll just say that seeing Charlie work for Microsoft is a little like seeing the two dudes in Spy vs. Spy hugging.  ;-)
  • Sometimes this job makes me feel like I am juggling seven running chain saws. ;-)
  • Geeks with too much time on their hands.
  • Am I the only one who thinks that XSLT is a totally underrated, underutilized technology?  Am I also the only one who thinks that XSLT is way, way, way too hard?
  • Danny Thorpe always likes to post these little teaser type things in his blog. He often sprinkles them in his conversation as well.  His latest?  The idea of the CLR on the Mac OS.  And so we know what that could mean for Delphi developers.
  • You know, you can give some people a bag full of rubies, gold, and silver, and they’ll still complain that the bag isn’t recycleable.
  • Here’s an excellent Javascript tutorial.  It caught my eye, because it was described as " for everyone who feels their Javascript skills just aren’t up to snuff.".  Inside the slide show, I found a cool link to an online Javascript interpreter/shell.

On XSLT: Too hard? Then produce TurboXSLT, that lets you design XSLT scripts with RAD!

"And so we know what that could mean for Delphi developers." Yawn… it just mean it will expand MS realm, not Delphi.

As long as you see CLR the only and fastest way to expand Delphi you will found yourself just running behind MS, and every release will push you further back…

I agree about XSLT - I’ve just finished 2 mini-projects involving XSLT. It is incredibly difficult to get your head around.

Perhaps the two are related :)

XSLT is certainly underrated and underutilized. I recall using XML Spy to create transforms a few years ago. Yes, it is very different and difficult. But once you get it, MAN is it cool!

I think that using TClientDataSet and its XMLData property along with HTML templates and some a few XSLT transforms is a REALLY cool way to create Web pages and even reports!

Having an XML Spy like add-in for the Delphi IDE that would allow for easier development of XSLT transforms would certainly be very elegant. Maybe it is an updated version of XML Mapper?

Please don’t get me started about XSLT, only course I failed in my Software Engineering Bachelor -.-
