Grady Booch’s recent ACM SIGCSE 2007 (SIGCSE = Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education) invited talk was titled, "Readn’, Writ’n, ‘Rithmetic…and Code’n". I love the title. It almost sounds like a country and western song title (if so, shouldn’t the "‘Rithmetic", in the title, actually be "‘Rithmetic’n"?).

In the talk, Grady covers three very important (and little talked about) aspects of software development: 1) the moral dimension of software, 2) the appreciation of beauty in software, and 3) the privilege and responsibility of being a software developer.
One of my favorite quotes from Grady’s presentation is from Bjarne Stroustrup - " Our civilization runs on software."
Way to go, Grady. I wish I had been there in person!
