Some developer statistics - do you match the profile?

In early March, I gave a presentation at the first (it its kind) Evans Data Corporation Developer Relations Programs Conference in San Jose.  During the two day conference, several of the presenters mentioned statistics from their own research and from a recent Evans Data developer survey.

Do you fit the profile or are you outside the average?

90% are male

40 years old (41 years old in last year’s survey)

62.9% are married

15 years of experience

64% of developers wouldn’t switch jobs (even to a higher paying job)

56.2% are developers because they enjoy logic and the challenges of programming

26% use/read blogs

93% make the purchase decision or influence purchase

53% believe the most credible resources are their peers, including online communities

60% purchase best of breed, not bundles

There are 20 million developers dispersed within the 6 billion global population

65% keep up with current trends

92% self-train through web sites and publications.

  2. ItIsSoDumbThatIsBetterNotToSayMyName Says:

If you and me are de 26%…

there are only 7,7… so 5 men and, perhaps, a little girl around still missing.

But… that little girl does not match with the 40 years poll result.

    So.. Someone cheats the polls…

  3. Jim McKeeth Says:

I am male, but under 40. I would hope that a 40 year old would have at least 15 years of experience. I am 31 and have at least that much.

I suspect that blog statistic is higher this year since 65% keep up with current trends and Blogs are a much larger cuttent trend this year, as well as a great way to stay in touch with peers and self-train.

  4. Andrea Raimondi Says:

    90% are male: check.

40 years old (41 years old in last year’s survey): turning 28 in July

64% of developers wouldn’t switch jobs (even to a higher paying job): check, I can’t think of any other job ever.

56.2% are developers because they enjoy logic and the challenges of programming: check, even though most challenges I’ve come across are beyond logic, because they treat Windows :D

    26% use/read blogs: check.

93% make the purchase decision or influence purchase: check, I’m a "lone" developer.

53% believe the most credible resources are their peers, including online communities:super-check.

60% purchase best of breed, not bundles: depends.

65% keep up with current trends: check.

92% self-train through web sites and publications: check.

    There you go! :D

  5. Dan Thomas Says:

Jim McKeeth talked about being 31 and having at least 15 years experience. I (probably foolishly) assumed we were talking about *paid* experience. I’m 48 and have been programming since I was 16, which means I have, uh, 48 minus 16 is, uh… I’ve been programming since before a 31-year-old was born. <sigh> CRAP I’M GETTING OLD! <g>
