Are you concerned with database/SQL optimization or performance?
Embarcadero Technologies’ DB Optimizer brings profiling and tuning into the development process so you can speed up implementation cycles and deliver optimized code to production. DB Optimizer can easily be combined with other database development and administration tools. It combines SQL profiling, tuning, and editing in to one interface and is a great compliment to any 24×7 monitoring tool.
If you want to see the product in action: on Thursday, August 14, we will present a new web seminar, Finally! The SQL Profiling and Tuning Tool You’ve Been Waiting For, by Greg Nerpouni, Embarcadero Technologies’ Senior Product Manager, Developer Solutions. Follow the link below for more details on the webinar and to register and receive the online meeting information necessary to attend the event.

The Gravatar Olympics
As you may be aware, CodeCentral now has support for Gravatar avatars. In honour of the pending Summer Olympics, I think it would be fitting to have a little competition. In this event (feel free to draw your own parallels with an actual Olympic event, because I’m too lazy to do so ;-)), the winning team will be the one with the most Gravatars associated with it. Teams will be split according to the first letter of the CodeCentral author’s last name. At the time of posting this, Team M is winning with a total of 4 avatars, closely followed by Team K, who has 3.
As this article explains, associating a Gravatar with your Developer Network account is easy. Simply sign up for a Gravatar account, using the e-mail address associated with your Developer Network profile.
The competition will run from now, until the Olympic Closing Ceremony on 24th August, so on your marks… get set… go!

Random Thoughts on the Passing Scene #74
- Doh! Fixed it to be #74
- Tiburon is so feature rich that Marco needs a whole book to describe them all.
- I just opened up my old Websnap components project in Tiburon and compiled it. It compiled just fine, and spun out about a dozen warnings. All had to do with sets of characters. I used the new CharInSet routine, and had it all cleaned up in about five minutes.
- Then, I took some code that I thought might be tougher — some HTML parsing code that was originally written in the Delphi 3 time frame. That took, oh, another five minutes to get up and running perfectly — and it uses strings, PChars, and pointers rather extensively. I simply changed the PChars to PAnsiChars in the sections of code that needed it. I left the Char and string declarations the same where it didn’t matter, and it all worked. If I want to make it accept UTF-16 characters, it would be a bit more work, but to get it working like before — that is, accepting only ANSI characters — was pretty much trivial.
- And you’ll be happy to know that TSmiley compiled without change and works perfectly in Tiburon.

Random Thoughts on the Passing Scene #73
- Delphi’s Anonymous Methods gets a nice mention in programming.reddit.com. Feel free to bump that article up! And don’t hesitate to read the interesting comments from our compiler engineer, Barry Kelly. (And by the way, the picture on Barry’s Blog needs updating — he’s far more hirsute now.
) - Want to be Embarcadero’s WebMaster?
- Check out TStringBuilder. The RTL also includes classes called TCharacter and TEncoding. More on that to come.
- Nice review of Delphi for PHP.
