C++ Builder 2007 and Delphi 2007

C++ Builder 2007 is coming soon, and we’ve done a few new things on the development side that help us release to market much quicker, and focus our testing efforts.

One of those things is ‘One install image to rule them all’. The DVD media that will ship with C++ Builder 2007 contains install information for all languages - and includes an update to Delphi 2007.

Now that’s a great thing, since a Delphi 2007 user who installs the new C++ Builder 2007 will automatically update Delphi 2007 files. This includes 1369 fixes to date for C++ (299 of those from Quality Central), and 285 on the Delphi side (92 from QC) so far. We have more in the works too planned fixed before release, though we’re locking down to keep things as stable as possible now.

A very important point that we’ll need to communicate to ‘the world’ : for users who own both C++ Builder 2007 and Delphi 2007, they MUST use the C++ Builder 2007 DVD for any future repairs, installs or uninstalls. This includes Delphi 2007 re-installs.

So when you do buy C++ Builder 2007, and you already have Delphi 2007, and want to reinstall or modify the features for Delphi 2007 - just put in the C++ Builder 2007 DVD (or run setup.exe from the cached files copied over during install, or use the shortcuts on the start menu - just DO NOT use the Delphi 2007 DVD).

Speaking of Install, we added a few nice options to the installer to allow you the option to keep the cached files on hard drive or remove them. Now, we do actually recommend keeping the 1.5GB of files since future upgrades and repairs will be possible without original DVD media.

We plan to post a Developer Network article explaining how the installer works with multiple products installed, how to install those products, limitations and general information.

If it’s a bad idea, it should be blocked somehow right?

Anyone inserting the Delphi 2007 DVD to update or reinstall Delphi 2007, when C++Builder 2007 is already on there, should get a warning from the installer.

This is something the installer should protect people from!

When you have a choice between making a serious mistake impossible, and documenting how to avoid the mistake, always choose making the mistake impossible, or at least more difficult, instead of giving users more factoids to remember.

This sort of thing leads to the nightmarish levels of "accidental complexity" that a Windows IT administrator has to deal with. :-)

I like the web based installs. I also hope that for those with SA, and who didn’t buy C++Builder2007, a new Delphi 2007 install dvd would be issued. No big matter since apparently we can save the download files from the web download version to our own DVD-R, but it would be nice, even so!

    Hi Chris!

I just found you blog from a entry in the main blog feed, with kind reference from Chris Hesik. Why don’t are you not in the main feed ?

    Per

  3. Chris Pattinson Says:

In regards to not being on the main feed - it’s just one checkbox I need to set to get onto the main feed when I create a post. I’ll do that in the future ;)

As to the Delphi 2007 DVD installing over Cogswell, we would need to go back and fix that for the D2007 CD’s we released. We’re doing that fix for C++Builder 2007 for future releases, I agree it’s something we need to protect people from.

Another one we’re already looking at is the updating online. The update to D2007 is expected to be made online, and we’re working on a bug where the IDE can be up during the update - which will result in a broken install. So we’re looking at closing the IDE during the update.

The plan for the update also includes availability of the ISO’s online for registered users- and for those on SA, a new DVD to be sent out.

From this statement "for users who own both C++ Builder 2007 and Delphi 2007 …" I read into it that we are now back to buying individual languages. The development studio concept was short lived.

  5. Chris Pattinson Says:

The studio concept is alive and well. A roadmap is in the works explaining the plans. C++ and Delphi together make a ‘mini-studio’, you’ll even see how the splash screen says ‘RAD Studio’ when both personalities installed. The IDE is already designed to support a studio. The only headache on my end is the number of install and test permutations - good thing we have a lot of automated testing.

Ah, a secret blogger! Its always interesting to hear what you guys are upto in QA!

  7. Bobby Will Says:

I personally like the studio concept. I like having different kinds of programming "hammers" for different jobs. Is there a projected release for a BDS 2007?
