Desktop Applications are not dead!

06 Aug

Got a nice email from Antonio Cangiano today, pointing out his post called “Desktop Applications are not dead!” Antonio points out that Delphi is a great solution for desktop applications — a point I heartily endorse. Antonio is responding to an article by Eugueny Kontsevoy called ”Desktop Applications are Dead”, and of course, we know that isn’t true.

We’ve known for a long time that Delphi is perfect for ISV’s. David I made the point at the Shareware Conference last month (where there were, it seemed, a plurality of Delphpi developers) and I made the point a while back as well on my Radio Show.

In any event, it was nice to read the comments and see folks giving Delphi a try.

And feel free to pop on over there and join Liz and me in the comments section. ;-)

Someone read the original post? Eugueny was claiming the desktop app are "dead" because the desktop itself became so clumsy to use to make clumsy appealing to users.

He complains about all the warnings Vista issues when trying to download and install anything, Windows installer popping up when not asked to, performance reduction after some install/uninstall cycle, useless and hungry apps installed by default, and so on.

He’s mostly right. Most people needs simple things, and simpler although limited web apps are more appealing when using desktop apps becomes a mess…

No, Windows is dead. Windows has turned into a turd of an operating system I still Run win2K and unless things change, and I mean a WHOLE lot, it will be that last windows operating system I ever use.

Win2k fixed the problems with Win98 and made things work a lot nicer. XP, did add some minor performance improvements but it was mostly window dressing.

Vista is just a big steaming pile of crap, the world knows it and ironically so does Microsoft. Just about every major vendor will still sell you Windows XP installed on a new system so even they know Vista is a steaming pile of dung.

You know how Vista works best? Strip out and turn off just about all the new bells and whistles that MS put into it, but if you do that, its really just XP that eats more memory, more disk space and gives you only marginal, if at all, performance improvements, and not only that its borderline SpyWare ( read ALL the EULA! ).

Get the CodeGear family of products ported to Linux, as quick as you can because it USED to be you cant get fired for buying MicroSoft.

Desktop apps will never be dead. Not while 90% of the world does dot have reliable web access. For the home user that can live without his "web word" or "web spreadsheet" for a day or so, but not any business. And then comes the issues of security.

But I agree Vista = Window dressing and a lot of bull…. .

Long live Delphi, hopefully on Linux soon!
